Here’s a translation of Kamila Valieva comment about challenges of adjusting to her new weight. She won the bronze medal at the Russian Nationals.
“Kamila Valieva: For me, this is the fourth Russian Nationals, the second in Chelyabinsk. There are a lot of flashbacks.
If we compare the first nationals in Kazan and the one now, it’s just a little less than half a step forward, but still forward. I did everything I could, although it wasn’t perfect. But there are difficulties, both height and weight. Sometimes weight doesn’t bother much, but at the moment, it was pressing on me.
Nevertheless, I’m glad that I pulled myself together and managed to do something. The short program went well. I’m moving forward gradually at my own pace; the main thing is not to get discouraged and keep working.
My idol is Elizaveta Tuktamysheva. At my first Russian Nationals, I remember she said, ‘This is my 12th or 13th Russian Nationals,’ and I’m thinking, ‘My age is the same as the amount of Nationals she had.'”
