Here’s a translation of Marin Honda’s comments posted on nikkansports.

Q: As a fourth-year university student, do you have a different state of mind heading into the Japanese Nationals?

Marin Honda: I have reached an age where, with the other athletes whom I’ve been with since we attended the Nobeyama (National Promising Newcomer Training Camp) in the fourth grade, I talk about ‘this may be the last time we compete together on the active front today or tomorrow.’ While I didn’t feel that way when my older brother, Taichi, retired, I strongly feel it this time. To fully show everything I’ve done until now, I will strive to compete without regrets and enjoy it more than feeling nervous. Even if I fail in everything, I want to think ‘that’s good.’ That’s my plan.

Q: How is it managing your academic studies as a fourth-year university student?

Marin Honda: Right now, it’s the period for my graduation thesis, and I have to write 30,000 words. I’m managing both this and the final sprint of my university life. I am enjoying everything. For a fourth-year university student, it’s a year of closure in various ways. More than feeling ‘it’s hard’ for every single day that I’ve taken for granted until now in my skating and academic life, I want to treasure them. I can do it only now, so I’m thinking that way.”
