Russian ice dancer and national champion, Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva told about her struggle with eating disorders. Here’s the translation of Elizaveta’s comment made for Okko Sports.
“Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to ever completely go away. You have to constantly think about it, control yourself, and not let go. It’s like a kind of addiction, similar to alcoholism or cigarettes. You mustn’t relapse, but keep yourself in good condition, convince yourself that you don’t need it, that you’re happy living without it. It’s not necessarily a stress, although it varies for everyone.
In my case, it started a long time ago – from a very early, unconscious age, I was restricted in my diet. That’s because someone once said I had bad genetics and that by the time I was 12, I would be the same size as my mom. My mom is a large woman. Naturally, she got scared and stopped feeding me. All the scandals were always related to weight. By the time I reached a conscious age, I couldn’t remember what it was like to live without it.
At one point, Kirill (Blagov, producer on Channel One and Elizaveta’s ex(?) husband) helped me a lot, one of the few – actually, the only person who said: ‘That’s it, I’m ready, we have to get out of this, and I’ll help you.’ To some extent, everyone close to me understood that I had some issues, they saw it, but somehow they thought, ‘She’s an adult, let her figure it out on her own; we’ll butt in now, say something, she’ll get upset, hurt, let her deal with it herself.'”
