Wakaba Higuchi, the silver medalist in the team event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics in women’s figure skating, spoke to the press during the national team training camp held in Izumisano City, Osaka on the July 8th. She expressed her thoughts on the upcoming season, saying, “Of course, results are important, and I want to set goals, but I also want to enjoy the practice and competitions the most. I want this year to be one without regrets.”

After the Beijing Olympics, Higuchi suffered a delayed recovery from a stress fracture in her right shin and announced taking a break in a mid of last season. She made her competitive comeback after 10 months at the Aqua Cup in Chiba on the July 2nd of this month. She will perform her free skate, choreographed by Shae-Lynn Bourne, to the songs “Fix You” and “Paradise” by Coldplay. Higuchi explained, “I took a break last season, and when I came back, I thought it would be nice to be able to express my feelings, so I chose this music.”

After taking a break, she said, “There is a great sense of novelty and enjoyment that I have never felt before. I have been working quite fiercely since I was young. I had enjoyable moments, but I approached it with a strong determination, like wanting to master certain jumps. Although I still have a strong mindset, I have come to appreciate the fun in being able to do things step by step. That may be the difference for this season,” as she reflects on herself.

In the upcoming season, Higuchi is scheduled to participate in the third event of the Grand Prix series, the French Cup (November 3-5), and the sixth event, the NHK Trophy (November 24-26) in Osaka. She aims to steadily improve her condition, saying, “It would be great if I could also land the triple axel.”
