Madison Haubbell: “Frankly, if they don’t figure out that a demographic other than wealthy, white, heterosexual couples can be related to, they’re not going to have an audience anymore.”

Papadakis, who is bisexual is also excited that the potential ISU ruling could create the opportunity to express a fuller range of stories on the ice.

Gabriella Papadakis: “I love to see a beautifully stereotyped man and woman – a beautiful prince-and-princess waltz – but not because we’re forced to, but because a couple thought it was beautiful and wanted to make it their own. But I always felt that was imposed on us, which, for me, never felt authentic. And I don’t think I’m the only one thinking that.”

Training with Madison Hubbell allows her a fuller expression of her identity, which once felt unattainable after 20 years of skating with a male partner.

Gabriella Papadakis: “It’s just nice to explore something that exists in me but I had never explored on the ice before.”

Hubbell and Papadakis plan to debut their routines on social media, where they hope to inspire voting members of the ISU to go through with the change. “As two-time Olympians and Olympic medalists, we have the opportunity to open that door and hopefully get people talking about it,” Hubbell said.

i think the rule will also benefit man-woman pairs. Imagine a woman leading the pair or a man being lifted by a woman. I want to see what that rule will bring us in the near future

This is not new to figure skating. “Similar Pairs” were skated and even judged in the past. I personally judged samevsex couples in the 1994 Gay Games as well. This will not ruin figure skating. It provides another way to express the great diversity, athletic potential and artistry that figure skating offers. I can’t wait to see Madison and Gabriella perform!

…and just like that Figure Skating was ruined.

We used to have “Similar Pairs” and even similar pairs competitions according to Janet Carpenter, who skated in them. Also, I judged both same sex dance and same sex pairs in the Gay Games of 1994. It is another window into the infinite variety of this sport!
