The program content that Ilia performed was completely different from what was originally planned, why?
Ari Zakaryan: Yes, initially the planned elements were different from what was performed. Ilia knew that many people in the audience were there to see a quadruple axel, even though this ultra-c jump doesn’t carry as much weight now. He is a guy who performs on adrenaline, so despite the visible fatigue and lack of rest after the World Championships in Saitama, he went for difficult content. Of course, this is not an excuse for him, but it’s good experience. The atmosphere in the sports arena during his performance was great, the audience was buzzing.
When and how was the decision made to change the program?
Ari Zakaryan: Ilia made the decision. I know that the coach insisted on performing an easier program.
Are you and your protégé satisfied with the season as a whole?
Ari Zakaryan: We are pleased with Ilia’s first senior season. It was difficult, but there were many victories. Ilia has shown that he is currently one of the most promising and strongest skaters in the world. The next season promises to be interesting. The emphasis will still be on the elements that many criticize, but in any case, the skater will show his maximum.
