The peak you are striving for – what’s next?

Anna Shcherbakova: Probably, there is no specific peak which I aspire to. Even in sports, I do not have only one goal, I always try to set myself different goals, the nearest ones. That is, to think about the nearest possible goal.

This makes it easier for me to train, to know where I am going, so there is no one goal, there are some tasks. I always strive to develop and to show the best possible for me result at every competitions.

I do not see a peak after which something can change. I always work, so to speak.

What’s your nearest goal?

Anna Shcherbakova: The nearest goal is the training camp. Training camps are important because this is the Olympic season. Despite the fact that there will be many other important competitions, it is still a special season and, of course, there is some worries ahead of it.

Therefore, the nearest goal is training camp in Novogorsk in order to get in good shape as much as possible.

Do you follow any other sports?

Anna Shcherbakova: I really like to watch many sports. And if by chance I comes across some kind of competition on TV, it seems to me, I’ll watch any with great pleasure.

Because I immediately have some kind of excitement. And it’s very interesting, even if I don’t really know the rules, just watch something new, figure it out. And so, more often I follow rhythmic gymnastics, I even know many girls.

When we have training camps in Novogorsk, we often cross with them, they came to watch our training. It seems to me that we have something similar – it’s a sport, but there is also a creative component, a program to the music.

For me it is also very interesting, I try to follow, watch the competitions, although, of course, I do not really understand the rules. So I watch as an amateur.

What is the most offensive word that Tutberidze called you? Most likely, it was in training, when something did not work out.

Anna Shcherbakova: Probably what happens in training stays in training. Because in general, we all work for the result and we all strive for the same goal, so, let’s say, we are on the same wave during training.

But does she often swear at you at all?

Anna Shcherbakova: Rather not swear, but feels the moment when it is necessary to praise, and where to scold.

That is, I may not work hard enough in some moment, but from the side it is always better seen. Therefore, as a coach, she knows exactly what she needs to do at the moment to make me do better.

Truly great coaches are gifted. They know what to say and when to say it. There is something about their character, their body language, facial expressions, tone of voice and knowing when to speak and when to be silent that distinguishes them.
In time the great ones stand out above the rest, just like the greatest athletes do. Ms. Shcherbakova is that type of an athlete and her coach is such a coach.
