Five word associated with figure skating

Evgenia Medvedeva: This are definitely music, pleasure, speed, difficulties and victories. All these five words perfectly complement each other. They make figure skating and skaters life stories’ so interesting.

How to wake up when an alarm clock’s gone off for the first time and not reset it?

Evgenia Medvedeva: I always wake up with the first wake-up call because I get up late.

I usually have my alarm set for about 9 am, since I don’t have early workouts. And even if it’s on the schedule, I usually skip it.

At the Cricket Club in Canada we have ice at 8.30am, I’ve been there at most five or six times in three years. And in the end, I abandoned this idea, because I am absolutely not productive in the morning.

Which of your wonderful programs is special for you?

Evgenia Medvedeva: You know. I generally try not to skate and not embody the idea that I don’t like. This is absolutely a dead end. I always choose music that gives me goosebumps. Which one is more memorable? Certainly Memoirs of a Geisha. Because this is probably the first program in which I have invested so much of me. This program means a lot to me. Not only in terms of sports, but also personally. This program embodies my personal growth.

Would you do bungee jumping or skydiving? Or maybe go into space?

Evgenia Medvedeva: I am an absolute coward in life. Therefore – no, I would not do bungee jumping or skydiving.

Go to space? Perhaps, because I understand that nothing depends on me, and this shuttle is commanded by a huge number of people, professionals. Therefore, I would probably fly into space.

But jumping from a height – no. Firstly, I am afraid of heights just like my mother. And I try to avoid anything that can harm my health. That is why I learned to ride a bike only at the age of 20.

In childhood, a lot of my friends broke their arms and legs riding a bike, scooters, roller skating.

So, I think: “I’m going to ride a bike now, I’ll fall, break my leg and won’t skate for another six months” – well, no.”

What is your mom’s signature dish, which do you love the most, and what diet are you following?

Evgenia Medvedeva: A funny question, because there is no signature dish, but there is a combination that my mother taught me and it is insanely delicious – it’s very, very strange, it’s bread, butter and pickled cucumber on top with very sweet black tea.

Zhenya, if your life was a movie, what would it be about?

Evgenia Medvedeva: If my life were a movie, it’s obvious that it would be a movie about figure skating and I hope that someday suc movie will appear. Because in my sports career there are really a lot of unusual events and it would be great if there was such a movie and Emma Watson played the main role.

Which programs of skaters in recent years do you remember because of the choreography?

Evgenia Medvedeva: In the past season, many had interesting programs and most of all I remember the free program of Papadakis – Cizeron. This is such absolute minimalism, but with a huge meaning that touched to the core. And Mariah Bell’s short program. Very funny, firy and unusual and for some reason no one usually takes such popular songs. She looked great.

What do you want to learn outside of sports?

Evgenia Medvedeva: You all know that I draw a lot, but I draw only on my iPad, electronically. This is certainly easier, because you can undo the action and shade it very nicely, and there are a lot of effects. But I would like to learn how to paint on canvas with paints, start with watercolors.

If you had the opportunity to go back in time, what would you tell your past self, advice?

Evgenia Medvedeva: The only thing I probably would say to myself is, as in that legend about the ring, everything will pass and this will also pass. There were many difficult moments when I wanted to give up, but I walked, walked, walked. I still have my family, parents, friends, who did not let me give up and helped me go forward. And very often I want to return to those moments when it was insanely difficult and seemed that it was the end, just said to myself, perhaps still very young and small at that time, that everything will be fine, that all difficulties will pass.

Last season you skated amazing Memoirs of a Geisha. How would you name a memoir describing your life?

Evgenia Medvedeva: I will certainly write the memoirs. My biography will be written by me. When is unknown. Work is not yet in progress, but for sure something will be done.

I plan to write a book after the end of my sports career, so book has everything from A to Z – my entire sports career, everything that happened on and off the ice. But these plans are only in my head.

It’s like painting a picture. I don’t know to name it, I haven’t figured it out yet. But something will be.
