Adam Rippon and Mirai Nagasu showed their new programs
Adam Rippon and Mirai Nagasu were brave enough to show their new programs this early. Let’s take a look.
Adam Rippon SP – Let Me Think About It (choreo by J.Buttle)
What I like about this program – it’s dynamic. It can get the audience involved, it has drive and energy. The program has some nice Adam’s signature moves. It can push him, it can set Adam for the fight. What I don’t like about this program – it’s a lot in the same style with his last year’s programs. Those programs were sucessful, but it doesn’t mean you should re-skate them again and again just to a different songs.
Adam Rippon FP – Bloodstream (choreo by Schwimmer)
Actually, I like this song, it makes me nostalgic of watching “Vampire diaries” ))) But some music and songs sound great in your headphones, but they’re not for a competitions programs and especially no for a free program! Unfortunately, this song is one of them. I was lost already in the middle. I don’t want to say it’s boring…….yeah actually it is. Sorry Adam, but there were a lot of the same moves, two-footed skating and skating in circles….Come on! You’re capable of much more!!! Maybe it’s not to late to change the program for something more suitable for competitions program and for such gifted in terms of PCS skater? And If he likes this song so much, he can redone this program for exhibition/shows.
Mirai Nagasu FP – “The Winner Takes It All”
Well, of course Mirai is not in a proper shape yet, but I still don’t see a lot of choreo in this program. Nice spins, lovely spirals, as always….and that’s all( I also see here the same problem with Adam’s FP – some songs are just not for competitions programs! And maybe I’m mistaken something but isn’t “The winners takes it all” a song about loser? Strange choice…..at least she could have found less depressing version of this song. Hope her SP to Chopin is much better!

I like what Adam did but I’m a little bummed about Mirai. I got a little teary when I saw her Demons program and was really hoping this would be a good comeback year, and I think she needs something that tells her story. Like “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten or “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson. I want to see her do something that says, “I have fallen down but I will stand tall again.” Maybe that’s just me, but that’s what I see for her. Even a program that’s rather warrior like – Mulan, House of Flying Daggers, the Karate Kid – would give more of the “I’m back!” vibe she needs. I like Mirai, I do, but I really wanted something stronger. I know she connects with the song, but I don’t feel the tears like she was hoping in that ice network article.
Chopin could be really good (Yuzuru, Mao) or not (didn’t really like Kovtun’s version). I hope it’s nice for Mirai’s sake. She is a fighter.
Mirai has powerful skating, so she needs powerful music, to match her skating. Plus strong classical music can help to “hide” some choreo weaknesses in your program. I think it’ll be hard for Mirai to get high marks in PCS with such program. It just don’t look serious…..maybe I’m just concervative. But it looks like an adult skater’s choice for the program)
I think something commanding would be good; I loved Scimeca and Knierim’s FS music. That might work.
