The announcement was made by the skaters themselves during a press conference held at the Bergamo Police Headquarters, where the athletes met with the press to explain the reasons for their separation. Here’s a translation of their comments.
It was not a hasty decision, but rather one that was planned and considered over time, as stated by Macii, who, unlike Conti, has decided to retire from competition: “Our paths are parting, just as we had planned; this was already decided a few years ago,” said Macii.m”The official announcement was delayed due to logistical reasons. Leaving competitive skating is a big step, but I’ve decided to fulfill my dream and pursue other paths. I would like to coach and create a sports center to raise the level of athletes in our sport. I can honestly say that I am very satisfied with us, with what we have done, and with who we have been, for better or worse.”
For Sara Conti, her career will continue with a new partner: “I don’t yet know who will skate with me; I’ve only done a few tryouts. There are people who have made me reconsider, making me realize that the Sara of today can ask for a bit more, can expect to have someone with the same hunger I had with Niccolo.”
Both reflected positively on their journey. “The path with Niccolo was very long,” said Sara, “and in one word, I’d say beautiful; it was a very difficult journey, but it was truly worth it. The best part wasn’t so much the results, but the steps we had to take to achieve them. Today, no medal can stop me, only the path we’ve taken over these seven years.” Niccolo echoed her words: “It was a long road. In the beginning, our training was double: first we’d go on the ice, then to the park, where we’d practice lifts with a friend filming us. In the end, we said to each other: let’s give ourselves two years and see what we can achieve. We accomplished a lot right away and never expected to reach what we did.”
