Amber Glenn (26), who finished fifth individually at the Milan-Cortina Olympics in February, explained her reasons for showing concern for Japanese skaters during the event. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.

At the post-performance press conference, Glenn was asked about her behavior at the Olympics. She recalled a moment when, after a disappointing mistake, Sakamoto crouched by the rinkside, and foreign media tried to film her up close. Glenn gestured to hold them back.

“At that moment, I wasn’t thinking deeply,” she said, “but I’ve also felt uncomfortable when people were too close after I cried following a performance. I understand it’s a scene that TV wants, but we’re here as athletes, not for television,” she emphasized. “I felt it was a bit too much. It’s a matter of human decency.”

She added, “When I see someone hurting, it pains me too. In moments like that, emotions can overflow. It’s a very tough time, especially with so many cameras and people around. What’s important is to show consideration as a person.”

At the same event, Glenn approached Chiba, who was crying rinkside after finishing forth , hugged her, and encouraged her, showing her caring nature.

Sakamoto commented in an interview that day, “Even at regular competitions, Amber always praises and encourages me. In figure skating, rivals usually have little contact before competitions, but she broke that notion. Her actions really helped me. I’m proud of her as a person,” revealing how Glenn’s character influenced her.

Chiba also reflected on that time, saying, “I was crying, feeling there was an insurmountable wall. When she spoke to me while I was overwhelmed with emotion, it was very reassuring. She saved my heart,” expressing her gratitude.
