During a press conference via videoconference, attended by Franceinfo sport on March 20, they discussed the media whirlwind after the Olympics and their return to training. However, the two friends have not clarified what they want to do next in their careers. Here’s a translation of their comments posted in Franceinfo.
“Q: You will be the only Olympic champions at Worlds. Why did you decide to come?
Laurence Fournier Beaudry: Our goal was to complete the season up to the World Championships. These will be our very first Worlds. So we see this experience as another first. And it helps overcome the post-Olympic blues a bit, so we don’t fall into a lull.
Guillaume Cizeron: As competitors, we’re medal hunters. We’d love to be world champions together. We’re certainly the favorites, so there’s a bit less pressure. I think there’s also just the desire to perform and honor our two programs that we love. For us, the show aspect is also important.
Q: What were the weeks like after your Milan-Cortina Olympic title?
Laurence Fournier Beaudry: We did our media tour in Paris, with the ceremony [for French Olympic medalists] in Albertville. Then we went home [to Montreal] and both got sick. I spent about six days in bed. I think the pressure dropped all at once.
After that, we had a small celebration with our team to thank them for their support. Then we trained again and went to Lithuania for a gala. Now we’re in our last week of training before Worlds. It went by very quickly. We really didn’t have time to rest or decompress.
Q: How did returning to training go?
Guillaume Cizeron: We tried to get back to it three weeks ago. I got sick first, then Laurence did. So at first, I skated alone thinking I was better, but then I got sick again. We really resumed two weeks ago. We skated three days before leaving for Lithuania, then resumed on Monday [March 16]. The challenge is to get back to a state where we can perform well, and to keep enjoying ourselves.
Laurence Fournier Beaudry: The first two or three days of training were harder, but it comes back quickly. We’re athletes at heart; we’ve been doing this for years.
Q: Did you use the break to discuss your future career plans?
Guillaume Cizeron: There’s always apprehension as an athlete when you’re close to the end. There’s a little fear of that emptiness, so there’s a bit of procrastination where you try to enjoy the moment without thinking too much about what’s next. But all possibilities are open. We haven’t really thought beyond this year. We’ll finish the season, rest, and then see what we want. It could go either way.
Laurence Fournier Beaudry: It’s definitely the end of a chapter. We’ve lived a novel over the past year. Now, these are the last pages of our book for this season. We really want to give ourselves the chance to enjoy, not jump into the future, stay in the present, and use the off-season to see what we want to accomplish, to bring, how we feel. It’s very important that we listen to ourselves 100%. (…) But the real answer is, we’re not discussing it.”
