Judge Jeroen Prins commented on how raising the age limit has affected women’s figure skating. Here’s a translation of his comments from the interview with Russain media.

Q: Four years ago, we talked about the level of women’s singles skating. You said that if, in the future, female skaters performed more interesting programs with high technical and artistic levels, like the men, women’s competitions would become more exciting. It seems that hasn’t happened.

Jeroen Prins: At this point – no, of course not. But we need to understand how raising the age limit has affected senior skaters, including at this Olympics. There were several programs with triple axels, and one with a quadruple toe loop. Overall, the programs were good and well thought out. In my opinion, the women’s event in Milan was both interesting and unpredictable.

At the junior level, it’s a different story. There are still many triple axels and quads, but the question is whether they will keep them as they grow older.

Q: Have you seen any positive changes in women’s singles skating over these four years?

Jeroen Prins: Well, I’m glad we saw such good skating, even without successful quads and with a minimum of ultra-C elements. The age limit, of course, played its part – and the sport has only benefited from it. The programs in the women’s event were very cohesive and “mature.” That’s a positive point.

Yes, Alysa Liu won the Olympics without ultra-C elements. But our sport is not just about jumps; it’s also about presenting strong, “mature” programs. And many of the women in Milan succeeded in doing that.”
