Mone Chiba, who placed fourth in women’s figure skating at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, held an open practice session on the MArch 11th at the Kinoshita Skate Academy Kyoto Ice Arena. Here’s a translation of her comments.
She is currently preparing for the season’s final event, the World Championships, and during run-throughs, she checked her movements to her short program “Last Dance” and free skate “Romeo and Juliet.” She showed her good condition, saying, “I’m practicing so I can deliver an even more upgraded performance overall.”
Chiba, who made her Olympic debut at Milano-Cortina and finished fourth, felt a sense of accomplishment but also shed tears at narrowly missing the podium. Right after the free skate, fifth-place finisher Amber Glenn (USA) told her, “You did great,” and “It was a wonderful performance,” which Chiba said “was a huge comfort and gave me strength.”
With renewed determination as she heads toward Worlds, Chiba also marked the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake on this day. Born in Izumi Ward, Sendai, she experienced the disaster at age five. “Every year around this time, I remember the earthquake. It’s something we must never forget, and I have to be grateful that I can practice like this,” she said with conviction.
