Kaori Sakamoto, who won two silver medals at the Milano-Cortina Olympics, announced at an Omega talk event in Osaka that she will compete at the upcoming World Championships, aiming to finish her career with a performance she can be proud of before focusing on coaching. Here’s a translation of their comments posted on Nikkansports.

The event was hosted by Omega, the luxury watch brand and official Olympic timekeeper, for which Sakamoto serves as an official sports ambassador.

When asked who she was happiest to show her medals to after returning from Italy, Sakamoto replied, “It’s hard to choose, but I was happiest to show them to my family. The moment I showed them (to my grandmother and others), everyone started crying… and so did I.” She shared this touching story of her family’s tears and her own.

Sakamoto will retire at the end of this season. Her final competition will be the World Championships, opening on the 24th in Prague, Czech Republic. “Since I have the World Championships, I want to make it a competition where I can truly be satisfied and feel that I gave it my all.”

After retirement, she plans to become a coach. “I want to become a coach and devote myself fully to developing athletes. I want to keep moving forward so I can nurture skaters who can succeed on the world stage,” she reiterated her ambitions.
