Kao Miura, making his Olympic debut, scored 76.77 in the men’s short program at the Milano-Cortina Games after struggling with jump errors and equipment issues, but did not blame his performance on his broken skate boot. Here’s a translation of his comments.

After his performance, he looked downcast and did not smile. “It was over in the blink of an eye. I feel really disappointed,” he reflected.

Before stepping onto the Olympic stage for the first time, Miura faced an “unexpected accident.” During practice on the 8th, his skate boot near the right ankle split as he landed a jump. In practice on the 9th, he reinforced the boot by inserting three plastic plates and wrapping it with duct tape. The boot had been damaged since before Nationals last December, but he continued to use it, reinforcing it as needed because of the fit. He had reinforced it again just before leaving, expecting it to last about a month, but it broke at an unexpected time. Despite trial and error, he managed to make the boot usable. “The boot wasn’t the issue. I was able to jump in today’s practice and the day before. It was just my own lack of ability,” he said, refusing to use it as an excuse.
