Ukrainian figure skater Kyrylo Marsak made a highly successful Olympic debut, setting a new personal best in the short program and expressing excitement and determination for the free skate. Here’s a translation of his comments.

Marsak scored 86.89 points in the short program – improving his previous career best from this year’s European Championships by nearly 10 points.

Marsak shared his first impressions with Suspilne Sport:

“An emotional explosion in my head. I don’t even know what to say. It’s truly incredible what I managed to do and how the audience welcomed us. It was simply amazing.”

Did you expect such scores?

“No, not these. We hoped to improve the season’s record by 1–2 points – not by 10. But we’re very, very happy to have improved so much.”

About the Ukrainian flags in the stands: “[We didn’t expect so many], they were everywhere. All the stands were filled with them. It was just incredible to see. It’s very pleasant to skate for such an audience.”

Did you have these thoughts during training?

“Yes, of course, training was going really, really well. I was ready for this competition. I just needed to be in the moment – and everything worked out.”

Are you ready for the free skate?

“Of course. In training, we’ve already partially run through the free skate. All the jumps look very stable. We hope everything will go well in the free skate too.”

About fighting spirit after the record performance:

“I want to show even better scores, to further improve my personal best in the free skate and overall. That’s the goal.”
