Daniil Gleikhengauz spoke about the form of Adeliia Petrosian and Sofia Akatieva. Here’s a translation of his comments.

“Daniil Gleikhengauz: Adeliia was at a very good level at the competition in Moscow. In Kazan, it was still a bit raw, many things did not work out in the free skate, and there were points lost on the spins in the short program. But there is progress from the exhibitions to the first stage, and from the first to the second. We would like to continue this trajectory to the Russian Nationals, to show clean skating in both programs there.

I like how she is training now. She is in good form. This is still the period when both the coach and the athlete enjoy the process. The coach invests, the athlete invests, and her mother invests and controls her a lot too. This is what we always say, that parents should work in unison with the coach and help. If you are moving in the same direction and you have the same opinion on everything, then you get good work.

She is currently in good form, watching her weight, following her regimen. In training, she executes the necessary volume that leads to the results, and at this moment she is the leader of our national team.

The situation with Sonya (Akatieva) is a bit more complicated. She missed a whole season due to injury. It’s a bit hard for her to find competitive confidence. She thinks that she goes out there and everything is as usual, but something goes wrong: nerves, legs aren’t listening.

After St. Petersburg, we discussed the quad toe loop that she fell on – she did it 30 seconds before taking her starting position. During the six-minute warm-up, she did it several times, then jumped it again while they were putting up the scores. But then she went out there, skated, and it was not even a resemblance of an attempt. Under-rotation, fall. And it’s just a matter of psychology at this point.

Obviously, she’s not ringing like a bell right now, it’s not a super form. She’s at puberty age, it’s hard, her body is going through changes. We’re doing run-throughs – it’s hard for her to finish fresh, her legs give out. This is compounded by missing previous practices and excessive nerves. That’s why we have run-throughs like the one in St. Petersburg”

Gleikhengauz also shared that Adeliia Petrosian is motivated to continue her career.

“Daniil Gleikhengauz: Right now, she could have already been a European and World champion, and next year – the Olympics. It would be great to compete for the top three in Europe and the world and for a spot among the top three at the Olympics. She would have gone through this path – three senior seasons. And after the Olympics, it’s unclear whether there would be motivation to continue or not?

Currently, she does not have this opportunity. And her goal in any case will be to continue skating – to eventually enter the international arena and win these competitions.

It’s tough, but I don’t see anything impossible about it. Clearly, there are physiological changes, the body changes, the spin speed decreases, it becomes harder to complete the programs. But none of this means it is impossible.

Impossible is when there’s simply no motivation. When a person does not want to take care of themselves, to train as much as they used to. If health permits and there are no serious injuries, then everything else can be overcome.”
