Sofia Samodelkina (17) shared how she was “stunned” by the news in sports media about her switch to Kazakhstan. Before the beginning of the new season, the figure skater moved from Russia to Kazakhstan. On October 4th, she took second place at the Denis Ten Memorial in Astana. Here’s a trabslation of her comment.

Q: How do you react to how the Russian media, experts, and coaches cover your transition under the Kazakh flag?

Sofia Samodelkina: Naturally, you come across it. You are online, you are a public figure, there will always be discussions. But at one point, I was stunned by the amount of news about myself. Whenever I checked, literally nothing significant had happened in my life, maybe just some trivial moment comes up, and yet everyone discusses it. I was honestly baffled at that moment.

When I skated in Russia and was younger, the media didn’t pay as much attention as they did after my change of citizenship. But, of course, I saw both good and bad. People write what they think. This is their opinion, their decision to write or not write.

Q: Does this affect your mental state in any way?

Sofia Samodelkina: Of course, when you read something bad about yourself, no matter how much you say you don’t pay attention to it, it’s somewhat untrue; it still somehow stays in your mind. But I have my close and dear ones who always tell me the truth, whether it’s bitter or sweet. I listen to them and try to improve.”
