In the interview posted on JBpress, Kao Miura reflects about the past season and things he wants to improve in his skating. Here’s a translation of his comments.

“I gradually learned how to compete at the senior level, showed my presence, and personally, it was a significant season for me,” Miura reflected on the past season. “I think it was a good season because I was able to identify my weaknesses and shortcomings.”

“This was my first time participating in the World Championships. I entered in the best shape I had been in, but I ended up delivering one of my weaker performances of the season. I think there was a vulnerability in the way I carried myself through the competition and in my mental approach,” he said. “I went into it with the usual competition mindset, but somewhere deep down, there was a strong desire to perform well at such a major event, the World Championships. My feelings got ahead of me, and my body couldn’t keep up. I was really in great shape, and all that was left was to show in the competition what I had practiced. So, I think the issue was not with my technique, but with my mentality.”

“I tend to overdo it,” he explained. “Especially back in my junior days, I couldn’t control it and often didn’t perform well, but recently, I feel like I’ve started to get a handle on it. That’s why I think it’s important to find a mindset that allows for more consistency.”

“In competitions like the Grand Prix series or the Japanese Nationals, I think everyone feels nervous to some extent. The key is how you can maintain normalcy, or keep the same mindset as in practice. If you rely too much on the idea of ‘performing better because it’s the real deal’ or depend on adrenaline, you might overdo it. So it’s crucial to aim to skate as you do in practice. I’m not going to do anything special, but I want to strive with that mindset.”

Reflecting on the last season, Kao Miura also mentioned that “Looking back at my performances, I felt like I wasn’t really skating.”

“Throughout last season, especially for the free program where I first used an anime song (‘Attack on Titan’), it was a great approach to letting people know about my skating. However, on the other hand, I felt a bit aggressive, and that made me want to embrace figure skating even more. I’d like to skate in a way that makes each turn and glide express something, to perform with awareness of the music, and to merge with the tune, making it a season where my skating can also come together with the music.”
