Ilia Averbukh hailed Adelina Sotnikova’s victory at Sochi 2014 as historic. Here’s a translation of his comments.
“Undoubtedly, this is a historic victory. The first Russian figure skater to become an Olympic champion in the individual event. Before that, Yulia Lipnitskaya was already an Olympic champion in the team event, but the most precious gold in figure skating is individual. Adelina Sotnikova won it.
Adelina was undoubtedly one of the favorites at that time. She was in very good shape. The main thing was to cope with herself. She did everything brilliantly, skated brilliantly.
She has forever opened the page of Olympic victories for us. After that, our girls do not give away Olympic gold to anyone. She undoubtedly won it deservedly.”

A well deserved gold medal. It was beautiful!
Adelina most certainly was not one of the favorites to win. Yuna, Carolina, Mao, Yulia and Gracie were better than her on paper before the Olympics. There might even be a case to be made for Ashley. Adelina only got into a medal contender position because her PCS components each “magically” improved about 2 points between the France GP in november and the Sochi Games in february. She ended up winning, yes, but let’s not make it into some expected result. She got lucky and benefitted from huge homeflation scores.
Besides, figure skating has been in the Olympics since 1908. Those 10 years that Russian kids have been dominant is a drop in the bucket.
she is indeed a pioneer in doping
She did not win this gold deservedly. It was such a shameful skandal, Sochi Olympics only opened the doors for Russian cheating. Well, you have had your decade and that’s It.
