“Although there were some mistakes here and there, I tried to stay focused until the end and finish well. After all, I can say that I started training properly after Nationals. Despite the limited time, I did my best based on my current condition, so I think I finished well,” said Junhwan Cha after winning bronze medal at the 2024 Four Continents Championships.
His coach Hyun-jung Chi also apoke about their preparation for this competition, “First, we reduced the amount of training because we didn’t want to strain the foot. After that, we couldn’t perform a full run-through due to the situation. We started from after the Nationals. There was some hesitation about participating in this Four Continents Championships, considering whether to aim for the World Championships, but from the perspective of the athlete and the coach, the decision was made not to go directly to the World Championships. It was a state of ‘Let’s focus on what you can do, regardless of the result, and confirm it.'”
Junhwan also added, “Honestly, what I kept saying to myself during this competition was, ‘Don’t worry about the result and just concentrate on the elements.’ I had previous champion experiences, and last season was much better, so there was ambition for results. But because I know my condition the best, ‘Let’s not expect too much. Let’s just focus on what I can do for now’ was the prevailing mindset. That’s why I feel more satisfaction in doing my best. While it would have been better for my own satisfaction if I had achieved a higher score or a different color of medal, the fact that I achieved third place will give me more confidence in training for the upcoming World Championships. In a way, it may serve as a strength for me to prepare for the World Championships.”
When asked about his next competition goal, he replied: “It feels like there’s barely two months left, and since there is a break, I think that time will be necessary to improve my condition. After that, considering that last season was good with placements, but this season is a different season. Rather than hoping for placements, I want to invest more time in training so that I can finish this season satisfactorily, regardless of the results.”
