Elizaveta Tuktamysheva shared what motivated her to continue her career after setbacks.

“If victories were the only thing motivating me, not self-development, I probably wouldn’t have been able to skate for so long. Because losses in my career happened repeatedly, and with that approach, I could have finished a long time ago and thought, ‘Why do I need all this?’

After all, development happens through a series of setbacks, victories, and losses. Nevertheless, you know that you can still do something, you feel inside that there is still something you can show. Something that you can tell the world.

There were such moments—failures, I would say. How did I motivate myself after them? For a while, you still mourn about it, scold yourself for not doing something right, for what could have been done better. There is some misunderstanding of why it happens, some sense of injustice. But for me, it was probably a week after some serious losses. A week or maybe a maximum of two.

So, I procrastinated on this topic, thinking, ‘Why do I need all this?’ But in the end, I still found the strength within myself because I love what I do.

At the moment when I faced serious setbacks, my love for figure skating prevailed. And I knew that my coach supported me, that he still wanted me to continue skating,” Tuktamysheva said in the “Go Study” podcast.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva explained why she took a break in her sports career.

“For me, development and self-improvement in sports and beyond have always been the main focus. I wanted to understand how much more I, my body can withstand. What else can I bring to figure skating, what can I convey to the audience: perhaps something new, some unique characters, programs, music. There were many different factors that motivated me to continue skating.

Now, what has changed is that when you’ve experienced the taste of international victories, and before, you still had the goal to skate well to go to the World Championships or the Olympic Games, the main events of the season, now there is no such goal. Nevertheless, it’s challenging at 26 to engage in daily training sessions twice a day.

It’s huge amount of work, and in recent years, I felt that after training, I had dark circles under my eyes. I could see them and was tired, not getting enough sleep. I thought that now might not be the best time to continue pushing myself like that.

Especially since the competitions I wanted to attend, I probably won’t go this season anyway. How things will unfold in the future will determine my mood for continuing my career,” Tuktamysheva said in the “Go Study” podcast.
