Two-time Olympic medalist and two-time world champion in women’s single figure skating, Irina Slutskaya, declined to comment on American figure skater Ilia Malinin’s quadruple axel in an interview with Championat.
“Irina Slutskaya: Ilia is the son of Tania Malinina, with whom we once communicated very well and were friends. But because he is an American, I don’t think it is worthy of our discussion now. It’s not right. I love my country very much and I believe that our skaters are still the best no matter what. They are still the best,” Slutskaya said in an interview with “Championat.”

What a weird comment by her. Bitter woman. As the commenter said, there hasn’t been a male Russian skater that has been on top since Plushenko (who won silver at the 2010 Olympics – almost 14 years ago! Other than that, no Russian man has come close to that type of success again.
Doesn’t make sense at all – she is completely wrong and pathetic on multiple fronts. First of all, Russians have not been the best in the world for men’s figure skating for over a decade, since Plushenko out of competition circuit. It’s the fact.
Secondly, the objective acceptance and acknowledgment of a foreigner being the best skater in the world is a professional call, which has nothing to do with her patriotism, and should not.
