What differences do you see between sports and shows? What do you like about it?
Evgenia Medvedeva: It will not be a secret if I say that comparing sports and shows is strange, these are completely different things, types of activities, and training is also different. If sport is more about discipline, many hours of training day after day, then the show is more about when you reap the benefits of your skills. That is, there is an opportunity not to train for many hours a day, but simply to show your soul and the skill that has been gained in sports. It’s just a little outweighed in the art direction. That is, these are completely different things, sport is sport, you can’t get away from it.
Is this some kind of outlet for you? Do not worry about grades, but be creative.
Evgenia Medvedeva: Well, I never really worried about grades, only for scores. (Laughs) No, there is excitement, of course, before going on the ice, it’s just different, it’s quite difficult to compare them. If at the World Championships you are worried about the technical component – jumps, then in the show, to be honest, you often think how to look prettier on the ice, how it is better to convey the image. Both numbers that I perform here in a show are special to me. Like every number in principle. Both in such red shades – “Carmen”, the second I skate to the beautiful Khibla Gerzmava. Most importantly, I enjoy what I do on the ice and I hope the audience does too. This is the most important thing to know about my numbers for today.
Evgenia, you are the champion among our skaters in terms of the number of shows this spring …
Evgenia Medvedeva: Really? Do you have such an award? (smiling)
Let’s try to come up with such, tell us what to award. But is this due to successful work of managers? Or do you just have more strength and desire than other skaters?
Evgenia Medvedeva: This is due to the successful work of Ilia Averbukh, in particular, who arranges a lot of shows. And we have the opportunity to travel to many cities in Russia. And my job is to please the audience and skate.
Do you think that the next season may contribute to the development of ice shows in Russia, because foreign markets are closed for us now, it seems.
Evgenia Medvedeva: I will say this: there have always been a lot of domestic shows and there will be a lot of them. And there will be even more. I am not the person who will comment on domestic and foreign policy now. We have always had shows. For example, last year in Sochi we had more than 45 shows during the summer. Isn’t that enough?
In Lausanne, you once defended the right of Russian athletes to compete in international events, and you did it successfully. You are a well-known figure skater not only in Russia, but all over the world. ISU congress coming soon. Perhaps you can comment on the current situation?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Both in my trip to Lausanne and now I have never put forward my candidacy. If my help is needed somewhere, if they ask me about it, then I will consider this proposal. But I did not put forward my candidacy anywhere and I am not going to do it.
Do you think the suspension of Russian athletes is unfair?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Let’s probably move on to the next question.
What are your plans for the summer, can you reveal something? Maybe you know with whom you will skate in a pair again?
Evgenia Medvedeva: There is a plan, scheduled until autumn. I hope it will be replenished with new elements, events, hopefully positive ones. As for pairs, I really hope that we will be able skate with Sasha Enbert, but these are just my personal desires. I hope that everything will be alright. But let me not dedicate anyone to my schedule just yet. We now live in a precarious situation.
