Evgenia Medvedeva: The next season is special
Evgenia Medvedeva and Eteri Tutberidze told about the plan of preparation for the Olympic Games.
How are you going to prepare for your first Olympic season?
Evgenia: The next season is special, so it will start earlier – in early June. I’ll pass the exams and then return to Novogorsk.
Will you listen to the opinions about your new program?
Evgenia: Our sport is aesthetic and to hear objective opinions is very important. My main task is to do my job well and with pleasure.
Will you again fool around, doing extra elements, like it was last season?
Evgenia: No, in the Olympic season I will do everything strictly according to plan. When I jumped an extra jump during the program, it really was a spontaneous action. During the performance, have compared all the pros and cons, I realized that I have the opportunity to show a little more than everyone else, even realizing that because of this marks will be lowered. But then they made it clear to me: I shouldn’t do it again.
Will Ilia Averbukh do the program for your skaters again next season?
Eteri Tutberidze: Not only Averbukh does programs for us. Ilia is one of the members of the team who works on programs and artistic image. At the moment there work goes fine. But if something goes wrong, we can add someone else.
Will Evgenia Medvedeva perform at the Olympics in both individual and team events?
Eteri Tutberidze: It’s not I who decide, but the skating federation. If you want to know my personal opinion, then I think she can do it. But we still need to make it to the Games.
You have prepared a number of very strong girls. Would it be interesting for your to work with male skaters?
Eteri Tutberidze: I would like to create my own man. Men’s skating has evolved, but our guys missed this moment. Now all perform a lot of quadruple jumps, but we do just few. I do not want to offend anyone, but I think it will be difficult for our aged guys to reorganize now. You need a different way of thinking, for this you need to bring up an athlete from childhood differently. So he perceived a quadruple lutz as an ordinary jump. Then it will not be a huge stress for him to repeat it at competitions.
Of course, you can swoop an athlete into action, but this is a huge risk. He just might get seriously injured.
