Eteri Tutberidze commented on Alexandra Trusova’s return to figure skating after giving birth. Here’s a translation of her comment.

Q: Are we expecting Sasha Trusova at France 2030?

Eteri Tutberidze: Ha-ha. Four years. That’s a long time… This is sport. Elite sport. For us, unfortunately, any training session could be the last. We must not forget the risks. It’s not just about ultra-C elements – though with ultra-C, the risks are even higher.

That’s why I have immense respect for Sasha Trusova’s character. After missing so much training time, after having a child… She’s still breastfeeding. But it’s her desire – to stand out, to master these jumps, the most difficult ones – that truly commands respect.

People like that are born rarely… For example, there’s the athlete Malinin. But that doesn’t mean there will now be a whole generation like Malinin. No, he is one of a kind. Just as Yuzuru Hanyu was unique, and Patrick Chan was unique. Malinin, with his abilities, is also unique. And so is Sasha Trusova. She should be seen as one of a kind.

That doesn’t mean we know exactly what advice to give or how to prepare, or that everyone will now jump like Sasha Trusova. No, it’s Sasha Trusova. Because the fear factor has not been canceled. The risk is huge, and fear sometimes prevents you from gaining speed and soaring up there. And not everyone can soar.”
