Coach Eteri Tutberidze reflected on Adeliia Petrosian’s sixth-place finish at the 2026 Olympics, emphasizing that mastering a quad jump requires more than desire – it demands character, determination, and physical ability. Here’s a translation of her comment.
“Q: Eteri Georgievna, what was your mood returning to Moscow from the Olympics? And perhaps, what internal conclusions did you draw?
Eteri Tutberidze: No, of course I’m disappointed. We can think, “What if…” We can try to compare with other athletes. For example, Anna Shcherbakova – she also struggled with quads in her Olympic season. At the Russian Nationals, and even the previous World Championships, we couldn’t land a single quad. She became world champion without quads.
Neither at the Russian Nationals nor at the European Championships did we have clean skates with quads. But she found confidence, desire, that spark in her eyes. She knew it was hers and wouldn’t let go.
Sasha Trusova went for a very risky program at the Olympics because it was a fight for medals, a fight for first place. Of course, that’s valuable. But in reality, neither we nor the situation have become weaker.
It’s just that a quad isn’t something you can just go out and buy in a store. It’s not something you’re guaranteed to learn, even if you want it very badly. It definitely requires character, an overwhelming desire, and of course, physical qualities.
We can teach, guide, give opportunities, provide ice. We know the path, but there are just some things we can’t do. We paint with the colors we have. Right now, we don’t have other colors in our set – just the ones we have. And Adeliia is wonderful; she can dance, she can convey an image. She has many positive qualities as well.”
