American figure skater Alysa Liu shared her thoughts after winning the gold medal in women’s figure skating at the 2026 Milan Olympics, expressing gratitude, joy, and humor while reflecting on her historic achievement. Here’s a translation of her comments.
“Last night, we had dinner with family and friends, and I’m so happy that they were here in the stands today. I absolutely adore my new dress – it might be my favorite one ever! I was eager to show it off to the audience. But imagine how silly I would have looked in this dress if I didn’t win today! Haha!” she joked.
When asked about whether her outfit added any extra pressure, Liu responded confidently: “I didn’t feel any pressure at all! I love putting on a show, and when I saw people in the stands smiling, I couldn’t help but smile back. I’m terrible at keeping a poker face – sorry! I’m so thankful to have had two Olympic experiences in my career, but I definitely enjoyed this one more.”
She added humorously, “Honestly, even if I fell on every single jump, I’d still proudly wear this dress.”
Liu expressed gratitude for the support she’s received and the people surrounding her: “I hope my story will be an inspiration to many. I’m so thankful for the encouragement I’ve received. I have my loved ones around me, and I know how lucky I am to be here right now.”
As one of the few American women to win Olympic gold in figure skating – a feat last achieved by Sarah Hughes in 2002, before Liu was even born – she acknowledged the significance of her accomplishment.
“I’m in shock,” Liu admitted. “The women in this club are exceptional athletes, and it’s such an honor to be included alongside them.
But to be honest, I never set out to achieve this specific goal. My main ambition has always been to create as many programs as I can in figure skating. So far, I think I’m hitting all my targets!” Liu concluded with a smile.
