Tatiana Tarasova commented on the men’s short program at the 2026 Olympic team event, noting Yuma Kagiyama’s outstanding performance, Ilia Malinin’s lack of energy, and the challenges Petr Gumennik faces with his music situation. Here’s a translation of her comments.

Tatiana Tarasova: Of course, I was amazed by Yuma Kagiyama, who skated his short program in an outstanding way. But it was the first time I saw Malinin make mistakes. In my opinion, he had no energy. No one expected this. What do I attribute this performance to? I don’t know when Ilia arrived or how many days he’s been in Italy.

Maybe Malinin is dealing with acclimatization, because I’ve never seen him like this – he had no energy.

Q: How realistic is it for Gumennik to compete with this Malinin and Kagiyama?

Tatiana Tarasova: Are you not aware that Petya will be skating to someone else’s music? Do you even understand what that means? I’m saying I’ve never seen Malinin like this, but when he’s in shape and skates as he has in recent years, no one can come close to him. But in the short program, Ilia made major mistakes.

Will Gumennik fight for medals? Everyone will be fighting, and so will he. But this is simply an unprecedented situation. Petya skated this program at the Olympic qualifier. The same judges and officials were there, and they said nothing about the music. There wasn’t even a conversation.

Then yesterday I read that only Russians are not allowed to use this music. Is this harassment at the Olympics? But now is not the time to discuss this. We need to support Petya, even if only in our thoughts.”
