A letter written by figure skater Kaori Sakamoto was displayed Tokyo’s Omotesando Station. Here’s a translation.
Alongside a photo of Sakamoto in costume on the ice, a handwritten letter was prominently displayed. The letter, beginning with “To everyone who always supports me,” reads as follows:
“Crying, laughing, falling, and getting back up again. Looking back, that’s been my skating life.
Because I had people warmly watching over me, I was able to see sights I could never have seen alone. I was able to reach places I couldn’t have reached by myself.
The applause that echoes in the rink, the words of encouragement I hear – all of it has always pushed me forward. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me.
I started skating when I was four, and now I’m facing a milestone season.
Showing everything I’ve built up day by day until now – that’s my way of bringing things together. Rather than aiming for perfection, I want to give a performance I can be satisfied with. Surely, the results will follow!
Please, watch over me. Let’s look back on the memories together after it’s all over. Well then, as always, I’m off.
Kaori Sakamoto”
