Nikolai Kartozia, the General Director of the “Friday!” TV channel, revealed the reasons behind selecting celebrated figure skating coach Eteri Tutberidze as the host for the show Big Girls. Here’s a translation of his comments.

“Eteri Georgievna Tutberidze is the embodiment of the work ethic I deeply admire. It’s simple: either you become a champion, or you’re buried under the ice. Why Eteri? Because this project isn’t about celebrities. This is a show about willpower and self-sacrifice. We needed a host who could instill more fear in the girls than the diagnosis of ‘obesity.'”

Kartozia reflected on a key moment during the show, when the participants had to confront harsh comments on body image:

“A week of fat-shaming. A training session: how to deal with people calling you fat. And then Eteri suddenly says:

‘I get just as much hate as you do. I might even be the country’s most controversial coach.’

There was a pause, as if a lead weight dropped into the room.

‘But I have one rule: I don’t give a damn.’

Hearing this golden formula, I realized I was looking at a true visionary. After all, ‘I don’t care’ is practically the catechism of modern television aesthetics,” Kartozia wrote.
