Wakaba Higuchi, a Beijing Olympic team silver medalist who announced her intention to retire after this season, earned 59.43 points in the short program. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Hochi News.

Skating to My Way, Higuchi executed a clean double axel, a triple lutz-double toe loop combination, and a triple flip. However, she stumbled during the step sequence, smiling wryly at her unexpected mistake. “I made an unplanned error, so I couldn’t help laughing while skating. That step sequence isn’t supposed to make people laugh, so I’ll have to fix it for my next competition. But I think my jumps went better than expected,” she reflected.

Looking ahead to the free skate on September 6, Higuchi outlined her priorities: “I want to focus on skating all the way through to the end. Rather than just targeting my jumps, my goal is to maintain strength and speed throughout the program. Even if I make mistakes on jumps, I don’t want to disrupt the flow of the performance—I want to fully express the program’s theme until the very last moment,” she said.
