On the opening day of the Masters in Villard-de-Lans, Kevin Aymoz electrified the audience with his stunning short program, scoring 97.09 points. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on L’Equipe.
Grenoble native Kevin Aymoz radiated joy after his short program, sharing his satisfaction:
“There aren’t enough words to describe how happy I am, though plenty of adjectives come to mind,” he said. Initially, Aymoz had planned to avoid attempting a quad or even a triple axel, but he changed his mind earlier in the week after realizing that his technique was solid.
This decision paid off, as it complemented his uniquely creative program: “I asked myself, ‘What am I going to do? Should I go for something emotional or fun? It’s the Olympic season – I have to make an impression. What will help me get the highest scores?’ Then I suggested the piano to my coaches. We built the program in two minutes and fifty seconds, and I thought, ‘Great, it’s beautiful, magnificent.’ But then I got bored,” he said with a laugh.
Aymoz revisited the concept, thinking about what his younger self would have loved to see on TV:
“Something unexpected. Something you wouldn’t expect from a guy.” That’s how his program took shape, blending a classical piano soundtrack for jump elements with the bold energy of Lady Gaga’s Judas.
