Tatiana Tarasova, shared her perspective on what makes the Russian school of figure skating stand out globally and the aspects that could benefit from learning from other countries. Here’s a translation of her comments.

Q: Why is the Russian school of figure skating considered one of the strongest in the world?

Tatiana Tarasova: The Russian school of figure skating has always been one of the strongest in the world – I’ve always said so. But, of course, our system is better than anywhere else. In other countries, parents pay for every practice session from a young age. Here, that isn’t the case. If payments are made, they are minimal.”

Q: Are there other aspects where we excel compared to other nations?

Tatiana Tarasova: Of course. Our coaches, choreographers, and athletes create programs that allow skaters to fully immerse themselves. They skate with soul, understanding the meaning of their programs and conveying various stories to us through their performances.

On Learning From Other Countries

Tarasova also acknowledged that there are elements the Russian school could adopt from other figure skating nations:

Q: What should we adopt from foreign figure skating schools?

Tatiana Tarasova: There’s always something to learn and take from others. For example, take athletes from the United States and Japan. They skate their programs, and afterward, no one is gasping for breath or collapsing from exhaustion. This speaks to their specialized physical training. That’s something we cannot yet boast about, although we are working on it.
