Evgenia Medvedeva spoke about the lack of nutrition awareness in her family. Here’s a translation of her comments.
“Evgenia Medvedeva: During 2016–2018, I lived with my mom and grandmother. My mom, in general, is not much of an eater and didn’t even have breakfast, so everything related to cooking and groceries was my grandmother’s responsibility. My grandmother never paid attention to her own diet, and her favorite thing in the evening was tea. We always had sausage, sugary cookies, and cream-filled profiteroles at home.
For many seasons, I would make a huge fuss. I’d open the fridge, and my stomach would shrink into a ball because I needed to eat something. A salad, something light, or a piece of meat. I’d open the fridge, and it would be nothing but sausage and dumplings in the freezer. I’d call out, yelling, ‘Grandma! How many times do I have to ask you…’
I tried to explain that we were, well, a team — I’m your family. Please, support me. If you want to, join me on this diet, I’m begging you. But no, there was always sausage, and I’d always end up grabbing a late-night snack.
If a child is underage and lives with their parents, and there’s no culture of body and nutrition in the family, it’s always very tough. Did it affect me in any way? Yes, there were times I really wanted to eat, but all there was in the fridge was sausage. I had no choice but to eat it, and I didn’t have the energy or time to go to the store.
Q: Did you talk to them about it?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Yes. My grandmother would say, ‘But you’re the one doing sports; that’s your thing. Am I not supposed to eat now?’ On one hand, she’s right, but seriously, please, help me just for two seasons. I have the Olympics ahead of me, I’m begging you. But no, there was always sausage,” the figure skater shared on the show “Katok.”
