Anastasia Gubanova leads after the short program at the European Championships with a score of 68.99 points. Here’s a translation of her comments reported by Sports journalist Maya Bagriantseva.
“Anastasia Gubanova: Today, I did almost everything that was planned. Although, of course, there are moments that can be improved. I’m incredibly glad that I was able to overcome this season — it was going so oddly and unsuccessfully that it was crucial for me to gather myself here. And it’s like starting all over again.
Finally, I came off the ice happy after the performance. I had been waiting for this for so long. My coach, Evgeny Rukavitsin, couldn’t make it to Tallinn with me — visa problems got in the way, so I had to put in a bit more effort to get myself into the right mindset for the program. My husband was here in the stands with his family; that helped a lot too.
Thank you for the support to the guys from our group at the rink, and thank you to the federation — I’m just happy today.
I came here without any specific expectations, not thinking about medals. Now, I’m looking at the small gold medal after the short program and of course, I’m happy, but I wasn’t focused on that. I want to step onto the ice on Friday and skate just like today; freely and cleanly, with joy.
Before New Year’s, I went to a show in Germany, and then to Belgium, where we were able to work more with choreographer Adam Solya on the routine. Then we celebrated Christmas together with him. It was a chance to reset, stroll through the Christmas markets and rest.”
