Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin lead after the pairs short program at the European Championship with a score of 71.59. Here’s a translation of their comments reported by Sports journalist Maya Bagriantseva.

Minerva Fabienne Hase: The performance wasn’t perfect; it seems nerves got in the way again. I really don’t know what I would do without Dmitri Savin, our coach. He knows me like no one else and always finds the right words before a performance. I had a rough practice this morning, but he says he is glad that mistakes come out during practice so we can hope to avoid them in the performance. This isn’t the short program that we can do at our maximum potential. So, there’s room for growth.

Honestly, we were really surprised by the time violation deduction. This is the first time it has happened to us this season. Apparently, we got too carried away with the final pose, haha. We’ll need to perfect this aspect before the World Championships.

Nikita Volodin: I think we were able to prepare well for this European Championships. Most importantly, we managed to stay healthy — I often get sick. I caught myself a couple of times feeling on the verge of getting sick, so I took a break and didn’t train for a day. It seems to have worked.

Minerva Fabienne Hase: We are in good form; it really helped that we managed to rest over the New Year. For a whole week, I just spent time with my family, walked with my boyfriend, slept, got massages, and went to the sauna. It was beneficial to disconnect a bit from the competitive race.

Nikia Volodin: I agree with Minerva, we were able to recharge during the New Year holiday. I went home to St. Petersburg. We had a show on the 30th of December, and then I almost spent all of the 31st flying; I landed in Pulkovo at 10 p.m. and hurried to the family, to the festive table, professionally — straight to the salads, haha. I spent 4 days at home, just resting, went to Tatiana Navka’s ice show, where my fiancee was performing, and enjoyed watching her. Of course, I came with flowers, how else?”
