“I think this program was too challenging because tango is a dance that requires a lot of energy. I can’t perform all the elements in conjunction with this program.” Aleksandr Selevko on going back to his last season’s free skate

Estonian single skater Aleksandr Selevko has competed in the two Grand Prix and commented on his trainings and programs. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on ERR.
“The short program is in good shape now,” Selevko confirmed. “I hope to perform even better at the next competitions. I should be in top form at the European Championships and World Championships at home, where Olympic spots are distributed. I prepared for the season in Estonia and the USA. I had training sessions in Tallinn, Boston, and Los Angeles. My overall speed is better than last year,” he added.
In competitions, Selevko has one quad jump in the short program, but in training, he has been practicing it with two quadruples. “Everything is very comfortable. In training, we are trying to do two quadruple jumps in the short program. I’m not ready to try this in competitions yet, but we are experimenting in training,” said this year’s European silver medalist.
However, his new, tango-based free skate with two quads has not been successfully executed in the first three competitions of the season. “I think this program is too challenging because tango is a dance that requires a lot of energy. I can’t perform all the elements in conjunction with this program,” explained Selevko.
Results with the new free skate have been over twenty points below expectations. Together with his coach, they decided to bring back his last season’s free skate. “I feel that the music from last season’s free skate gives me energy, which I don’t feel with the new program. Currently, it is necessary to change the program. We will think further and see how it goes from there.”
As for the goals for this season, Selevko mentioned doing a program with three quads. “Everything is going well in training; the quadruple lutz and two quadruple toe loops are all fine. I’m not yet performing four lutz jumps in the free skate at competitions. There’s no problem at all with two quadruple toe loops in training; it’s just about pulling it off in competitions. I think I just need a bit more time to be able to perform these jumps in competitions.”
