In the interview posted on Wep Sportiva, Yuma Kagiyama talks about his new short program. Here’s a translation of his comments.
The “Dream On Ice 2024” was held at the KOSE Shin-Yokohama Skate Center from June 28 to June 30. In this ice show, conducted in a competition format with all lights on and a six-minute practice session, Yuma Kagiyama (21) presented his new short program (SP) for 2024/2025 season.
“Lori Nichol, the choreographer, said that “The Sound of Silence” would match my quiet edgework, so I chose this song. The first half is really quiet.
For the audience in front of me, I think they can hear the sound of my edges, but since it is a song that skates quietly, it’s very challenging because if I don’t show it to the fullest with my skills, it will look like a flat program. I think I have to work harder and harder,’ told Kagiyama.
“In terms of the challenge of expression, there are still rough parts, such as when I let down my guard, and the sound of the edge shrieks. I want to avoid showing those parts. The step sequence towards the end occurs with the song climaxing, so I want to show use of my body and expressions that level up to it.
What I’m desperately trying to do right now is to not make noise with the edges in the first half. There are also many transition movements, but I want to show a careful edge work. Since the audience seats are very close in ‘Dream’, I want to show a smooth glide that doesn’t let the sound be heard.”
“I don’t know if I’m going to put the quadruple flip in this season’s short program yet, but through “Dream On Ice,” I wanted to challenge myself and firmly feel the success of whether I can do it or not,’ he commented on the possible jump content of the program.
“I want to prioritize improving the quality of each competition this season. Last season, when I returned from an injury, was truly a start from zero. I participated in many competitions and gradually extended 100% of my available skills. At this stage of this season, the quadruple lutz and quadruple flip are consistent in practice. So I want to be able to perform to my satisfaction from the first competitions, as if I could score 300 points. I want to strive to perform to win in all the competitions I participate in as a result. This season, I’m naturally aiming to win at the World Championships, so I want to do my best not to lose to my rivals.”
