Mao Asada about her ice show “Everlasting 33”, here’s a translation of her comments.

The ice show “Everlasting 33,” chaired by Mao Asada, will open in June at Tachikawa Stage Garden.

“A project that only 33-year-old me can do, a challenge that can only be done here…” that’s how Mao describes her new show.

“I felt like I had given my all in BEYOND, so I had no ideas left for the next show. I needed to gather some inspiration, so I watched a variety of performances at a pace of two per day,” Mao recalled her previous experience with chairing an ice show. “In New York, I saw ‘Chicago’ and ‘Moulin Rouge,’ among other Broadway masterpieces. Argentina, known as the home of tango, provided an unforgettable stage beyond my expectations. In Las Vegas, besides ‘Cirque du Soleil’, I experienced a show using the latest technology called ‘Awakening,’ and a small-scale show in a tent called ‘Absinthe.’ I had a series of inspiring days with each magnificent performance. Although not directly applied to my ice show ideas, I learned ‘Oh, this is the direction I want to go.’ By observing various entertainment directions, I sensed my own path. That was a good experience.”

“‘BEYOND’ was all about delivering our power no matter what. For my next venture, it’s about taking it a step further towards a more mature image. I’m eager to show the audience a unique unity and mature performance achievable only because of our collective experience, so we’re practising daily for that aim,” Asada told about the difference between her shows.

“An ice show entirely performed to live music is, I believe, a first in Japan. Since all are familiar classical pieces, it’ll be a wonderful musical treat,” she told about Everlasting 33. “Since this ice show is produced together with Inoue of Theatre Orchestra Tokyo, I believe it’ll be a luxurious show where you can enjoy both skating and live music.”

“When I visited ‘a certain place’ about a year ago, I felt I wanted to do an ice show there. It’s a place where nobody has done an ice show before. The show will be in a never before attempted format.” That “certain place” is Tachikawa Stage Garden, a multipurpose facility with movable front-row seats.

“My ice show is developed with a concept to make it enjoyable and accessible to everyone, from first-time skating viewers to children and the elderly. I think incorporating the best parts of various types of entertainment to create a completely new form is one of the best things about skating, without erasing elements of ballet and highlighting the charm of skating.”

“I want to express a larger love that encompasses everything.” Finally, this is how Asada describes her thoughts on the title “Everlasting33”.

“I was inspired by the meaning imbued within the number 33 as it’s my age and also corresponds with the message of 33 roses. My research led me to realize that 33 roses signify ‘eternal love.’ I immediately thought, ‘there’s no better concept for the show!’ The type of ‘love’ I envision isn’t just limited to romantic partners; it extends to family, friends, the love of skating, and the love of performance. This is how I perceive it: this ice show is my biggest desire, and I aim to convey a greater love that encompasses everything.”

Sounds promising. Japan is producing an amazing variety of ice shows, Russia alone can compare as far as I know. I wish beautiful Mao the very best in this and all her endeavors.
