Japanese ice dancers Misato Komatsubara and Tim Koleto announced their decision to split up. Misato will retire as a competitor, and Tim is said to be considering various possibilities. Misato posted a message to the fans on her Instagram. Here’s a translation of her comment also posted on Nikkansports.

“I sincerely regret to inform you that I have decided to end my 23 years of competitive life with the World Championships held in Montreal last March.

This year, I really struggled with injuries in every competition, but I was able to achieve my highest personal score at the Four Continents Championships in February, and I was able to perform in a manner I loved at the World Championships in Montreal.

Through these experiences this season, and having made my Olympic dream come true, I realized that I truly felt I had given my all in my competitive career.

“Knowing what is enough.”

I had been tirelessly searching for what I lacked, chasing what I didn’t have. When I suddenly looked back, I found myself filled with wonderful memories and treasures from the wonderful people I met through competition.

The reason I was able to enjoy my skate journey in such colorful highs and lows is thanks not only to everyone involved with the Japan Skating Federation, but also to our sponsor Tsukuba Memorial Hospital, everyone who pushed our backs in the crowdfunding campaign in 2018, the on-ice teachers who have always helped me to grow, my teachers on and off the ice, the local rink managers, my former partners who spent time with me, my respected seniors and colleagues, all the fans who have supported us, and my family. And above all, my partner Tim. Without each and every one of those who have been involved, I would not be who I am today. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude.

Through my competitive life in skating, I learned to confront problems and to enjoy the process of confronting them. I have been allowed to see even more beautiful scenery in the midst of many wonderful experiences and hardships.

Using all that I have learned, I will continue to absorb a lot as an individual and strive to be one of those who can help realize a more prosperous society..

As for my future plans, if requested, I will appear in ice shows as a professional skater with Tim, take courses, examinations, and lessons to obtain a coaching license in Canada, and take action to support a healthy competitive environment for athletes, both mentally and physically, regardless of country. Therefore, I appreciate your continued support. If you need anything, please feel free to contact the same management company that will continue to represent me.

The feeling of the wind on my cheeks when I first skated still brings a smile to my face 23 years later.

I truly had a happy competitive career.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Misato”
