Evgenia Medvedeva shared how she has changed since ending her competitive career. Here’s a translation of her comment.
“Evgenia Medvedeva: It was only when I finished my competitive career, only a few years later, that I realized, ‘I did great!’ In sports, that never happened.
But sometimes I wonder what it’s like to be in top-level sports and compete at the same world championships with the mindset I have now. What is it like to step on the ice and, if something doesn’t work out, not scold yourself for it but, for example, praise yourself for what you did? Not berate yourself for what you didn’t do.
Because I didn’t have that. I could do 350 jumps perfectly, and if there were mistakes on 5 of them, I would just think, ‘Oh no, I’m nobody.’ Now, I have 10 mistakes, and if I land one jump, I think, ‘Didn’t fall on my butt – that’s good!’ It’s also an extreme, but it’s enough for me for the shows,” said the two-time world figure skating champion.
