What is your relationship with psychology?

Evgenia Medvedeva: Over the past couple of years, it’s been more familiar. We have set up a system where if there’s a need, or if I feel like it, I start a video call and talk right away. It’s not like going twice a week for four years straight… Maybe it’s necessary, but it’s not my case. Each person has their own approach.

Have you worked with sports psychologists?

Evgenia Medvedeva: That’s why I mentioned the past couple of years… For instance, for three calendar years, I didn’t compete. When I went through the realization that I might not compete again, I thought, ‘Alright, I need to take even a small step into real life, without training, schedules, strict diets. Allow myself to have fun, live, and sometimes even stay up at night.’

For that, I needed support. I needed a professional who would say, ‘It’s okay, you can do it!’ That’s when I started working with a psychologist. Then, I thought, ‘No, I actually like suffering.’ So, I stopped, but after six months, I came back.

And step by step, I reached a point of strong self-reflection that helps me. I don’t need weekly support. I can live calmly for months, and then suddenly, I realize something, something comes to my mind, and I need to discuss it.

What do you mean by strong self-reflection?

Evgenia Medvedeva: These are quite personal matters, so I won’t speak specifically about them. For example, I went on vacation with the girls, my friends, who are also figure skaters. We were sitting together at night and discussing various topics related to our lives as skaters. When a couple of words came up, my eyes widened, and I realized why I reacted to things the way I did for those 6-7 years. Immediately, I messaged my psychologist and had a call the next day.
