Higuchi Wakaba is coming back. Last October, she announced a break during the early stages of the figure skating season. Reflecting on the days that followed, she says, ‘The word “recharge” perfectly described it.’ Although she had already performed in ice shows, the senior women’s free skate at the Aqua Cup on July 2nd in Chiba City will be her first competitive event in a while. We asked the 22-year-old, who is starting anew from ‘zero,’ about the time since then and now.
“This spring, I graduated from Meiji University. While there is a sense of loneliness that comes with the end of my student life, I can fully concentrate on skating. I feel like I’m able to practice in a really good way,” she says, her bright smile reflecting the true sense of fulfillment. “After returning, my physical condition is really good, and the quality of my practice has been gradually improving. I’m glad I took a break.” She can genuinely say that from the bottom of her heart.”
In the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics held in February, Higuchi shone on the long-awaited grand stage. She contributed to Japan’s first medal, a bronze, by placing second in the women’s short program (SP) in the team event. In the individual competition, where she finished in fifth place, she successfully executed the triple Axel, which she had been pursuing relentlessly, in both the SP and free skate.
