Who is your figure skating idol?

Alena Kostornaia: It has always been Aliona Savchenko for me. Her determination to win, motivation to train hard and win, and her long career. It makes you think that this person loves figure skating so much that everything else is secondary.

Of course, Carolina Kostner also has always been and remains an example for me. I love the way she skates, her interpretation of the programs, and how she perfects every movement. Her long career also makes you think. This person is so devoted to her craft that everything else is secondary. It’s very cool. There are few people like her not only in sports, but in all areas.

How do you deal with hate?

Alena Kostornaia: At first, it really hurt me. Yes, I read everything – both bad and good things. At one point, it hurt so much that I wanted to argue and fight in the comments section.

The more time passed, the more comments I received. All I can do is open them, laugh at them, and move on. I have things to do, and I won’t waste my time trying to bring someone down. And if someone has the time to do that, then I feel sorry for that person. They haven’t found something they love to do yet.

Also, I believe it’s impossible to please everyone. Even candies aren’t liked by everyone. The same goes for people.

Every angry comment allows me to grow mentally – the fact that I don’t respond to it. I also look at what people like, and try to rethink it, discuss it with family and friends. If we agree that something was wrong, we correct it.

How often do you think about your titles?

Alena Kostornaia: Probably, you mean the European Championships and so on. That was a long time ago. It happens…

I hope that I will still have the opportunity to make a name for myself. I still believe that I have a long career ahead of me, and I will be able to bring my titles to a new level. Actually, I only think about them when I’m introduced at a show. Otherwise, I never try to show them off.

The figure skater also answered a question about her measurements.

Alena Kostornaia: For some reason, this is a top-5 question. I don’t hide it: I’m 155 cm tall, and my weight is 43-44 kg. Sometimes it varies depending on the situation. Height minus 112 – in general, this is a standard scheme for athletes. Some consider it minus 114, some minus 110.

When I was younger, the difference was a bit bigger. But I think that now I have a pretty good appearance that allows me to successfully perform elements.

Alena Kostornaia talked about whether she has breakdowns during training.

Alena Kostornaia: Yes, breakdowns happen quite often. I’m a perfectionist by nature, and when something goes wrong in training, I react strongly, immediately exploding.

At first, it’s like, ‘Oh, damn it!’, ‘What the hell!’ Then come the tears, and sometimes, if it’s really bad, I hit a board with my palm. The board shakes, my hand hurts, and I feel both pain and disappointment.

It happens very rarely. It’s very unattractive. I try to control it very strongly because we have only one nervous system, take care of it.

Have I become the person I wanted to be as a child? Yes, I have. My goal was to become myself, not pretend to be anyone else, and to live my life in a way that I liked everything. I have almost achieved this goal, and I’m satisfied with almost everything.

I have things that most of the world’s population doesn’t have, so I can’t complain. I have accomplished the main goals I ever had.

Alena is so gifted – one of the most beautiful skaters I’ve ever seen. (I’m talking about her skating, not her face or figure.) She is one of the skaters most hurt by the COVID lockdown. I hope she succeeds in becoming a top pairs skater and having a long competitive career. Go, Alena!
