The day before, the ISU Skating Awards ceremony took place in Zurich. Ilia Malinin won the “Special Achievement” nomination; he was the first in the world to jump a quadruple axel in competitions.

Tatiana Tarasova: Ilia Malinin is not a Russian school. He is an American athlete with Russian parents, but they live in America. His only connection to the Russian skating school is through his parents, who grew up in Russia and were brought up in a Russian figure skating school.

When I was watching Russian men skate I couldn’t help but notice that some reminded me of Malinin. I am American but I don’t understand this weird thing where only Russia gets treated this way. Why does this even matter? Malinin’s American and I am too but I still know I have Irish blood coursing through my veins and am proud of it. I don’t understand this need to distance yourself from where your previous generations are from. There is so much beauty and good that has come from Russia no matter how much war hungry politicians from America say. I see how proud many Russians are of Malinin and I have seen some Americans now slandering him a homophobe just bc he apparently said “girly” I say I am “girly” I guess just being American isn’t enough he has to bow down to the language police.
