ISU Skating Awards for “Special Achievement” this year was awarded to Ilia Malinin. Malinin was the first in the world to perform a quadruple axel at a competition.
As for the nomination “Special Achievement”, it is clear that Ilia Malinin is indisputably worthy of it, but Russian fans were upset that they did not see Sasha Trusova among the nominees. Do you think it is possible for her to be nominated for this award in the future?
Ari Zakarian: My personal opinion: Sasha achieved brilliant results, showing five quadruple jumps at the Olympics, this is an absolutely incredible breakthrough in the history of figure skating.
But at the moment, I think the 4.5 axel was so revolutionary that it outweighed the jury’s opinion. I think that’s why the jury voted for Ilia.
As for future awards, I’m sure it will be possible to return to Alexandra and her achievement. She has every right to appear in this nomination.
