According to Match TV, the Swiss law firm Schellenberg Wittmer Ltd, which represented Kamila Valieva at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing in February this year at the Beijing Winter Olympics, refused to cooperate with the Russian figure skater. Thus, at the announced CAS proceedings, Valieva will most likely be represented by Russian lawyers.
In addition to participating in the hearings in the Valieva case in Beijing, as a result of which she was allowed to participate in the individual competitions, this firm previously represented RUSADA in the case against WADA, as well as in the appeal against the IOC decision on the lifelong suspension of a number of Russian athletes from participating in the Olympics.
“We had a number of arguments. Among other things, we presented arguments to the panel that Kamila is a protected athlete. We also discussed how the notification of the results that the Stockholm laboratory analyzed took place. We had a number of arguments about proportionality and fairness of the process. We are really satisfied that CAS considered our arguments properly, and that the appropriate decision was made, which is the right one,” Anna Kozmenko, a partner at Schellenberg Wittmer law firm, previously told Match TV.
According to Match TV, with a high probability, Russian lawyers will now be offered to handle Valieva’s case. On behalf of WADA, Valieva’s case at the upcoming hearings will be handled by the Swiss company Kellerhals Carrard.
According to figure_skating_online telegram channel, the decision of the Swiss law firm is connected with the fact that on November 24, the Swiss Federal Council approved the application of the eighth package of EU sanctions. This means that Swiss residents are prohibited from providing legal services to Russian citizens and companies.
