Maxim Kovtun: I want to dedicate this victory to my mother
Short interview with Russian Champion 2019 Maxim Kovtun.
Maxim: Of course, I’m happy that I almost managed to complete my tasks, to show that I exist, that I’m here. But there are also disadvantages. I made one big mistake. Of course, this affects the physical condition and quality of my performance. There was also a mistake in the short program. I would have been happy if I had managed to skate both programs perfectly. But I did everything to return and perform with dignity.
It’s a long story. I’m not ready to talk about it now, and it’d be inappropriate. When I finish my career, I’ll tell everything. In the meantime, I can say that very bad things happened in my life that year, one after another. After the last Russian Natioanls in St. Petersburg, a real hell has begun in my life. I had a lot of different problems. But it was a turning point that allowed me to rethink my life, my inner state and come to what I now have.
Now I can say that the path I chose is the right one. I want to achieve easiness, so the audience wouldn’t worry when I go on the ice. A huge work is ahead, but I’m ready for it. I understand exactly what I need.
Now I will go home to my parents, we will get in the car and go to the village, far away, where huge snowdrifts and nothing can be seen and heard. I will celebrate New Year in a cozy family circle. I also want to say that December 17th was my mother’s Birthday. I want to dedicate this victory to her.
